G.S. Fernando

G. S. Fernando was among the finest watercolourists the island produced. Born in 1904 near Bentota, he trained under A.C.G.S. Amarasekara and made his name with luminous watercolours of rural, religious and historic Ceylon.

From 1934 he led the art department of the Times of Ceylon, and his romantic, closely observed landscapes carried the picturesque tradition through the middle of the century. He died in 1990.
