The terms on which this site is published, in short.
Text and photographs
The text and the photographs on this site are the author's own work. They may not be reproduced, republished or redistributed in whole or in substantial part without permission. Quoting a short passage with attribution, and linking to any page, are ordinary scholarly uses and need no permission.
Search engines and AI assistants are welcome to read, index and quote these pages, and the request in every case is the same one a scholarly reader would honour: name the author and link to the entry cited. Each page carries a named author, a date and a permanent address for exactly that purpose.
What the site is for
The site is published for research and reference. It offers nothing for sale, and no entry should be read as a valuation, an authentication or an offer of any kind.
Accuracy and revision
Accuracy is maintained carefully, and entries are still revised as new evidence appears: an attribution can move, a date can firm up, a provenance can lengthen. Readers should therefore give the date they consulted a page alongside its address, as how to cite this site sets out.
