Iromie Wijewardena
Iromie Wijewardena has worked since 1973 in a warm, figurative-expressionist manner, her canvases and textiles filled with processions, dancers and the ceremonial life of the island in bold, flat colour. She was among the first graduates in fine art of the University of Kelaniya.
Her painting The Royal Procession was reproduced on an official postage stamp of Yugoslavia, believed to be the first Sri Lankan work so honoured by a foreign state, and in 2021 she received the national title Kala Bhushana. A retrospective of fifty years’ work was held in 2024.
